hey matt, what do you know about Nikon's?
looking at a used D40 (NOT 40D, lol) for just a beginner DSLR for the girlfriend. yay or nay? looks like the price is right, so that's not much of a worry.

yeah, I'm excited to upgrade beyond something basic eventually because I've seen what can be done with them. but I honestly know nothing about photography, so a learning process it must be!
and all the macs in the library at school have PS so I can mess around with editing, and we can rent nicer DSLRs free of charge, so I can fudge around with those too once I have some knowledge to build off of.

I would suggest starting with the XTi Rebel like what Pete has for sale. It's easy to butcher a photograph when you don't know what you are doing. Not to mention it's not the camera that makes the photograph, it's the photographer and a decent set of glass.
