The differential housing can be opened without much effort. Opening the differential houstong to look for broken parts or chunks of metal is an option. I've seen mine sitting open, yet still "assembled", at JEH many times. You might want to confirm that opening it doesn't require any work/parts to put it back together...but from what I can tell the aluminum side (back) of the differential housing comes off and no parts are attached to it.
It's going to be hard to diagnose the problem without taking things apart. I took my car in for diagnosis before it actually failed and they were unable to hear what I was hearing...eventually the pinion gear gave out and it was very evident / not drivable. Good luck, Tim.

I am hoping that my ears aren't fooling me, because it sounds like the noise is comming from the rear right...mid level. If this is the case...it could be just the axle nut that needs to be re-torqued:

To be sure, I may crack open the differential housing like u suggested. Or at least change the diff. fluid to see if there are any oversized particles floating around in there.
