I hate to admit it but I think the CR will have a bit of an advantage as development comes along. I think the winning AS CR this year was on stock shocks with just a big front bar, I may have mis-read that though.

Is the passenger airbag in '04-'05 cars triggered by a weight sensor in the seat, or is it always on? I'd like to be able to carry my dog in the car occasionally.

I guess I can always wire a cutoff into an earlier car.
I just wanted to add, they do have harnesses for dogs which can be attached to a seat belt. I dont know of any tests or research on the actual protection they provide, I'm just saying they are available. I think it was in a Defensive Driving course I attened that I heard this, but something like there is a 95% chance of a human fatality if the person is ejected from a vehicle during a collision (so buckle up). So, if the harness keeps the dog inside, I'd assume his chances of survival are higher, too, if he was kept in the vehicle.

We have those harnesses for our dogs, and I can attest to their effectiveness. We were involved in a 40mph crash with both our dogs harnessed in the car, and they were fine after the impact.

The harnesses should be reasonably effective in a frontal collision as well, since they are basically a padded full body harness with a tether that latches into the stock seatbelt latch.

Still, I would rather defeat the airbag while my dog was in the car, since the airbag is designed for human occupants to use in conjunction with a seatbelt. Even with a harness, a dog will not occupy the same physical space, nor will they move in the same manner as a seatbelted human in an impact.
