Well, I had the first gen. Kenwood mp3 player & it's pretty bad. The 2nd gen. (Z828 & 8017) is pretty bad also. Tweeter had an Alpine 7878 & a Kenwood Z828 on display. MilleniumRX2 & I tried out an mp3 disc...First we tried the Alpine. It loaded up & track to track was quick as a regular cd audio disc. Next, we tried the Kenwood. Load up time was at least 10-15 seconds & track to track was at least 3-5 seconds.
I don't know about anybody else, however I can't stand waiting that long for it to load up & to go to the next track (Kenwood). Got mine installed at Cartoys for free b/c I bought it from them (& then returned it).
I know some of you are saying the Alpine's expensive (As cheap as $590 online) compared to the Kenwood Z828 (As cheap as $450 online). However, in this instance, you get what you pay for. I hope this helps. I was just informed that the Pioneer mp3 players take as long as the Kenwoods also.

I have the sony mp3 player and it takes about 20-30 secs to read a cd-rw with ~100 songs on it. The time between tracks is about the same as any other cd player. I like it and the price is about 1/3 the price of the alpine.Really need the dash control accessory that is on the group buy page though.

3rd Gen Kenwood most likely will improve on load times.
One of the best values for MP3 is the MP5010K by Jensen. It does a disc scan only once- when you put in a new disc. Track to track is actually a tad faster than a regular CD and if you turn off the car, the track position (where you were at your last song) comes right back on.
Most people DON'T choose Jensen because of their name. But I sell products I've tested and believe in (one of the reasons I only sell MP3 decks).
