PS3
My Ps3 just crapped out because of a software glitch in Grand theft Auto. The glitch caused all my ps3 games to get a consistent "start up error". However, I am able to play a Ps3 game for a couple of minutes before the error starts to happen. Note that this ONLY happens to a Ps3 game, everything works and functions perfectly.
Unless someone on here knows how to fix this without sending it to Sony, I have a couple of options that I may take.
First Option: Be patient and wait until the new firmware update comes out next month to get it running properly again.
Second Option: Call Sony, complain about it, and send it to Sony for a replacement unit. (Which may take about a month)
Third Option: (And the reason for me posting on here) Since I'm not a very patient person, I'm thinking of selling my unit to someone that IS patient and purchasing a new unit from gamestop or something.
About the Playstation 3 60 GIG: It was purchased from Circuit City and is around 10 months old. Although I do not have the original receipt I can most likely get Circuit City to print a duplicate for me from my profile so you can send the unit into Sony (or wait for the firmware update). What makes this Ps3 different from the ones that are currently out is that this is one of the few units that has the ps2 emotion chip built into it. So rather than using emulation to run your ps1 and ps2 games, it has the actual ps2 chip to run all the backward compatible games without any glitches. I'm letting it go for $300 if anyone is interested.

I was reading about this and it sounds like a defective blu-ray drive. Do blu-ray movies work at all? If it's under warranty I would seriously just send it back. Not sure if they do this on repairs, but they might have to send you the 80gb version since the 60 is discontinued.
I guess if you can get a receipt from Circuit City, $300 isn't really a bad price to pay, so good luck with that
I think if it's out of warranty it would cost around $150 to get it fixed.
There's a suggested fix for this as well, but I have a feeling it won't work for you, here's a link if you haven't tried it: http://www.gamingnewslink.com/2008/05/05/f...-lockup-on-ps3/
Anyways, sorry about the bad luck.

Yeah, I have a feeling they'll send me an 80 gig version. Although I will lose the current version if I sell my unit, I would rather have Sony repair my 60 gig version and send it back to me over give me a 80 gig version if I do send it in. But yes, Blu-ray movies still work as well as ps2 games, ps1 games, and dvds all are running fine. Its when I try to run the ps3 games is when I get the "start up error". I imagine once the new firmware comes out, it will override whatever corrupt data that is causing this.
Just to clarify, I still have it under warranty for another 2 months.

I bought the 60 as soon as I could, and now mine crapped out....They want $150 to have it fixed out of warranty

Yeah, GTA4 is evil...Oh well.
Does it store the updates on the hard drive? I would think it does. (its just a laptop hard drive....)
Wonder if the HD got formated or put a dif one in what would happen, would it be like the 1st time you powered it up? So then you'd have to "re get" the updates (cept the GTA one of course...lol)
Was just a thought, i may take one (laptop HD) and try it out to see what happens...

The firmware version and O/S isn't stored on the harddrive, if it is we wouldn't be able upgrade our harddrives and have the PS3 working properly since we weren't supplied an O/S install disc. Unfortunately Sony has made it to where you can't reinstall a firmware version to prevent hacking of the system. So even though you may have formatted the harddrive, the current firmware upgrade that you made is still installed and running.
The upgrading of the Harddrive is a good idea...but it wouldn't help any if the problem isn't a harddrive issue. I have a feeling that this is a firmware issue that will be addressed in the next release. (Not sure if I can wait that long...) Oh well. I'll try a couple of more things before I do anything extreme. (Like send it off to Sony and risk them trading the system off for an 80 gig version)

LOL OMG it's happening on 360 and ps3 lawls. Sorry Rich but there's a few people at my work who have the same issue. Most of them know how to reflash the PS3's firmware to fix it. But that's what it sounds like..... I have no idea how to flush the firmware on the ps3 and reflash it since I dont have one but I'm sure u can find a guide for it somewhere online. If all else fails u can find a way to reflash the bios inside the ps3 as well. Someone mentioned to me that turning off the internet connection on the ps3 prevented it from happening as well. Overall I'm glad I waited =P.
Hmm, reflashing sounds like a real good idea...I just have no idea how to do it. I'll find a way...I always do.
And reflashing the bios?? That sounds like I'd have to open up the Ps3 which I'm certain voids the warranty and not to mention if I screw up on the bios then I'm done for.
Boo, I'll research the firmware reflash though.
