Stimulus?
does anyone listen to tom lycos on 105.3? I don't get to listen to him much anymore, but he's pretty "conservative" and said he likes it better when we have democratic presidents because even though more of his paycheck is withheld in taxes, he makes so much more money on his investments because the economy is usually doing better.
I know some people take the stance that the economy doesn't depend on the president, but I just want the economy to pick back up and even surpass where we were. I know it'll pick back up in my lifetime, I'm only 24, lol.

It wasn't deducted from your earnings, it was an advance credit on your income taxes. Big difference.
Anyway, I agree with AATees on all fronts. There has to be a balance, but if Obama and the gang don't realize soon enough that it is the "rich" that create jobs and employ the "poor" (using both terms loosely), then this economy is going into the crapper even more quickly than it already is.

While we're at it, this is the exact same reason you should NOT be getting a tax refund. That simply means that you PAID TOO MUCH throughout the year, effectively giving the government a interest free loan. Idealy you should come out where you get very little back or even have to pay some (either way you made the money, it's just a matter of if you had it in your bank or theirs).

Why not? It's a tax free loan? Sure it stinks that everybody thought they were getting "free money" but next time you'll know. You could take the money and put it in a 1 year CD and earn some interest on it and have it in a year when you would have had it anyway.

...Ugh, sorry for the rant, but it bothers the hell out of me when I see medicare/medicaid patients who drive up to our pharmacys drive-thru in M3's, AMG Mercedes, Lexus's, and get their prescriptions paid for by the government.
Does it also bother you when wealthy people take advantage of their social security benefits? It's the same concept. Maybe they don't technically "need" it, but that doesn't mean that they aren't entitled to it.
[quote name='Doug0716' date='Dec 31 2008, 12:56 PM'] I'm just curious how many people that "don't have much disposable income" are living above the AVERAGE lifestyle for major expenses such as house/cars/hobbies/ect.

+1 to that, although I'd argue that the average person living in a $175k, 4 bedroom house is more than "just getting by". My wife teaches children who live in families that are "just getting by", and many of those families have to decide whether to buy their kids a second pair of shoes or pay the electric bill this month. Think about that the next time you go to the closet and claim you don't have anything to wear.
No offense to Corey (I'm just singling you out as an example, buddy - you know I love ya!), but when you've got three brand new $35-50k cars in your garage it's hard to really be sympathetic to your complaints about your tax burden. Yeah, you work hard, and you deserve to be rewarded for the effort you put in. You also have a better quality of life than 99.99% of the people on this planet ever have, or ever will.
Maybe instead of complaining about what we don't have or what's being taken away from us, we should all be thankful for a moment that we live in a place where we are free to complain about how bad life is, and that we have the luxury and convenience to voice those complaints in the internet to anyone who will listen.

I agree with you and I'm not really complaining YET. If Obama overtaxes what he deems the "rich" (same people undeserving of any tax credits or stimulus payments), then there will be negative repercussions for the economy as a whole.
How many "poor" people have given you a job lately? (rhetorical question) I like working for some guys who make a ton of money because I know they are creating jobs, paying hundreds of people good money, taking care of thousands (families) through medical and dental benefits, etc. When your boss/owner isn't making a lot of money that's when you should get really worried versus being worried about them making too much.
All that said, good sentiments, Iain. Every single one of us who can spend ANY time jacking around on a car board during our day is incredibly blessed compared to the majority of the world.

Really? That bothers you? Considering the fact that those people are likely the ones that primarily supported the Medicare & Medicaid programs (during their working years), then I think they are very much entitled to taking advantage of those benefits.

But when I see people driving these $50k+ cars around getting their prescriptions for free then see elderly patients who are supposed to be retired and are on a fixed income having to charge their credit cards a couple hundred dollars at a time and even getting a personal loan to buy their prescriptions to literally live, I think theres a problem.
I know that some of the audience was not of taxpaying age back in 2001 but the same thing happened. People got a check earlier in the year and that amount was deducted from their taxes filed in 2002.
