Thumbs up V Tech Engines

Could someone please try and give me a simple description of what exactly is a V Tech engine? I know that there is more to driving the S2000 than what we are doing, but until Brian was kind enough to give me a short ride in his Ultralight at the Rally today, I did not really realize how little I know about driving this car. What exactly is happening when it changes?

I tried to pay attention to where he shifted at the RPM's, but honestly, the first time experience is so overwhelming that all I can say is it felt like the car just took over... While he assured me that my car can do this, I tried running the RPM's way up in first and second gear and my effort did not seem to produce much of anything except a husband gripping the seat with white knuckles... Plus, it didn't seem to want to stay in that "mode."

If someone could please just give a simple explanation of this, it would be helpful.

Thanks,
Cathie

Here's something to get you started:

BTW.. it's VTEC... not VTech. VTech makes phones. VTEC makes smiles.

Hey Cathie,
Good to meet you yesterday and put a face with the name

The reason you may not have "felt" the VTEC kick in... If you just have moderate pressure on the throttle just driving at a slow speed or cruising and just let the rpms slowly wind up, you won't really feel the VTEC engage at 6000 rpm. You'll just cruise up through the rpms without a big noticeable difference. However, if you get your husband to really hang on and hop on the gas like you are trying to accelerate as fast as you can... when you hit 6000 rpm, you'll really feel the cams switch over, and the car will suddenly feel more powerful and the engine note will change a bit...

One of the best places to feel this if you aren't one of those daily speed-racer types is to try it on an on-ramp when it's not really busy. Start out fairly slowly in a low gear like 1st or 2nd and then really stand on the gas. You'll feel more power kick in at 6000 and you'll be smiling from ear to ear... oh, and be ready to shift when you hit 8200 (since you have an MY05) and start the fun all over again.

Cathy I found out that VTEC stands for Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control. Yeah, I know, why VTEC out of all that.

I told you I would figure it out!!!

Like EgoThreat said unless you are standing on it you might miss the engagement. When you are standing on it not only are there more G forces, not quite like the Ultralite tho, but also the noise quotient goes up.

You need to talk to that husband of yours he was spreading all kinds of rumour and untruths about you having trouble getting into your S with the hardtop on. He even mentioned he thought he would have to buy you a helmet

Thanks so much for all of your responses. You all are such a nice group of people. We are really looking forward to getting to know as many of you as possible.

I think I understand basically how the VTECH engine works. The above website was a great help... Since the car has still been in the breakin period, up until a couple of days ago, I have not been running the RPM's up, so guess I might not have noticed such a difference anyway... I will try the entrance ramp on the freeway.

As far as my husband goes... There is a reasonably good chance that he is going to get hurt as soon as I drag him out of bed... Don't ever believe half of what he says-you cannot trust Biology teachers. Although there may be a few witnesses to attest to the fact that I did have a degree of difficulty in getting in and out of Brian's Ultralight, as fellow owners, I trust they will look on that as a figment of their imagination...

We had a great time meeting so many of you and hope to see you again soon! It was so much fun!

Or if you prefer the 00-03..

The site has some pretty nice pics on it of Hondas. I found it on a google search really quick, looking only for a s2k engine pic.
google > all.
