Default 2005 S2000 Rough start - Poorly! HELP

Hi Guys,

Apologies but i dont come on here often but i really need your help & advice on my 2005 Honda S2000. I have owned her for about 2 years or so now she's run sweet as a nut & has only covered 48k.

The past couple of weeks she has struggled to start, you hit the button and she chung chug chugs and struggles to start sometimes it can take 2-3 attempts. Once started shes ticks over as smooth as silk.

Ar the end of this week she chugged & threw out and engine ecu light on the dash so i took a visit to Vtec Direct to get it on the diagnostics. It showed a missfire on all 4 cylinders. The guys at vtec direct advised me it could be a number of things, Plugs, coilpacks, valve clearances, Cylinder head gasket etc... Andy at Vtec direct's first thought off the cuff is it could be the secondary air pump. i thought to myself i'll go home & today i'll get my backside out of bed & test a few things.

1. checked the plugs & changed them (old ones looked fine a lovely light brown colour so no fueling issues looking untowards. (Great)

2. I tested each of the coilpacks with an Omns meter to check the contacts to see if they were all giving a similar reading... nothing untowards.(Great)

3. Checked the battery (brand new) & the reading were fine (Great)

4. I reset the ecu by placing the key in the ignition & removing the 7.5amp back up fuse for 5 mins & replacing...

5. started the car (stone cold) fired straight off the button with no chugging, let the car idle for ten minutes & then turned her off.

6. let the car warm up, i could hear the secondary air pump working and then clicking off (great looks like that is ok 'Think'!?)

7. Decided the car seemed ok & possibly fixed so i decided to go for a drive to the gym & workout for an hour, came out of the gym got in my car fired her up (engine still looked warm enought to not engage the secondary air pump & she started to chung but when i revved the engine it sounded like she was running on 3 cylinders. The Engine light started flashing so i quickly turned her off & left her for 5 minutes. Turned her back on to get home she chugged on restart but the engine light stayed on & the car idled perfect i drove home with no missfires or anything.

'REALLY Confused'

Hopefully going to get the car back in with Andy at VTEC Direct on Wednesday when he can fit me in, Has Anyone else had this problem?

Cheers

Craig.

Hey Craig
Issues like this a fairly straight forward to diagnose if you follow basic rules.

Its either a fuel/ spark/or compression issue.

In most cases spark.

Check all cylinders are sparking when cranking then move on from there.

You can do this with a timing light if you have one or spare plug in a coil pack earthed against the head.

For all of them to show misfires I would start to thing along the lines of fueling (low/erratic pressure) - check the piping around the fuel pressure regulator / intake for starters, then fuel pump relay and electrical connections.

Sorry to drag up an oldish thread, but I had the same problem and symptoms on my old Charade GTti. In the end it turned out to be the fuel pump dying.

Hope this helps

Let us know how you got on.
