6th Gear

6th Gear
Some people may remember that i posted about 3 months ago with regard to no 6th gear, As my engine and box have come out of an accident damaged car i've no idea on the cars previous history, other than it crashed.
So once the translant was completed i couldn't find 6th gear, anyway this has been a bit of pain, not that i need 6th gear it's just it should be there so i want it
The other night i was sat in the car and decided to see if i could find 6th gear with the engine not running, after a while i found it, but not where it could be got at while driving, to engage 6th you had push down like you was going for reverse and pull the gear lever towards you, but not enough to engage reverse and then you could get 6th
so opting for the easy fix i just removed the gear lever and took about 3mm off the noggin that stops you hitting reverse while on the move, reassembled and everythings fine, you still have to push down and across to get reverse but 6th is now neatly tucked below 5th as it should be
now i've just got to find me an airfield to try the top speed out
it's probably not much interest to most on here but if anyones got a box that won't engage 5th or 6th then it's worth a check if the cars out of warranty.
I think it can be done without shaving anything off the gear lever as the gearbox pushrod looks like it can be adjusted but rather than take anything apart only to find out somethings not right this seemed the easy option.

Weird??!?
I'd heard that synchro on sixth was very soft and easy to damage by shifting into 6th from gears several below (e.g. 3-6).
As this is a habit of mine I'm v. worried - but I can't see how overriding the reverse detent would help?
