Has anyone done this? I did a search but didn't find much info about it except to get a high level input amp.

I don't really want to get an aftermarket HU or faff about with installing rear speakers but do want a bit better (clearer and louder) sound so was thinking why not do it this way, so I just hook up the amp, run the wires and I'm done! I don't know much about amps etc though so can anyone recommend me one? And where do people mount their amps? Under the passenger seat?

Completely pointless. You'd be amplifying poor quality sound into poor quality speakers.

Plus there isn't a pre-out on the stock radio (not my stock radio, anyway).
