Default Advice Needed..

Hi folks,

I have had an offer on my car from a chap in Southern Ireland. I have never done business with someone outwith the UK. Has anyone on here? I'm finding it hard to get my head round the payment issues, I am obviously concerned that their payment may default as they are merrily driving the S back home... for free...

Insist on cash and pay it straight in before they go.

They had suggested a bankers draft... My concerns are if these can be easily forged. It's terrible that the world has come to this where no-one trusts anyone anymore. They would obviously need to exchange euro's for sterling before they travelled over then. It could be better for them that way as I believe the exchange rate is currently in their favour..

They should be able to arrange pick up of the money from a branch local to you if they are with a big bank.

Haydn wanted cash when I bought the S 4 years ago. I had no problem with that as I can understand the concern with bankers drafts. Did feel odd walking around with

This sounds alot like a very common autotrader scam.

Any of these sound familar?

1) Will buy without seeing in person?
2) Will pay you extra on the bankers draft to cover transport of the vehicle to Ireland?

Its a scam, the bankers draft will be a fake (i've seen one) and you pay for the transport but your car goes nowehere and you never see your money again.

Might not be, but be warned, bankers drafts are no better than a cheque, it is days before you can confirm that funds can be drawn against them.

Watch out.

Was contact by e-mail too?

Sounds like they are picking up the car from S(exy)'s first post though Gav.

If the guy turns up from Ireland with a handful of cash then, no problem, no different to selling it to someone on your street, but just lets see whether he is proposing to come in person, i'm not sure.....

What i am sure of, if he wants to drive off on the day then do not accept a bankers draft unless its sent well in advance and funds are confimed cleared and able to draw on by your bank, could be up to 2 weeks for that!

S(exy) - more details?

Thanks for this guys, I really appreciate it.

I was also worried about the Autotrader scams, one of my pals recently sold their car and somone tried the scam that you mentioned Gav on them.

This guy wants to come over. He called and said the car was for his son. He tried to push me as low as possible on price and then said he would come over and drive it back. He asked where the nearest Ferry port would be and said that he would have to pay duty when he got into Ireland but that was nothing that would effect me. He also left his number in Ireland (which is a legitimate number).

I said I would mull over his offer as it's a bit less than I need...
