Default Air Filter

Took my airbox lid off a few weeks ago to see what all the fuss was about when running without it. And WOW! It sounds awesome.

But can someone tell me if the standard airfilter in S2k is supposed to be a cone shaped one similar to the after market items you can buy from K&N and the likes?

I have been running without the airbox lid practically since I got the car (very addictive isn't it!) and FFS the filter looks very dirty at the moment and is covered in mud/crud/dust etc!!!! lots of it seems to be loose dirt and brushes off. bizarre.

have not noticed a drop in performance but do you think it is worth replacing it anytime soon.

I ran with my airbox cover off quite a lot last year and a little this year. Then my S2000 got sick and started to stall (no idle revs when warm). The check engine light came on. I pulled the code and it was a manifold air intake temperature fault.
I noticed the air filter was quite black so I changed it, reset the ECU and all has been well since.
Air filter neede to be changed after just 13000 miles. Supposed to last 27K. I imagine that running with the cover off didn't help, so I'd change it more frequently if I were you.
I have had quite an improvement at the pump too, almost enough to justify the relatively high price of the new air cleaner. Car must have been running too rich and choked itself up!

Try going for a washable filter such as a K&N if you know it's gonna get dirty - could save some pennies too in the long run...
