Default Autocar cabrio review & reliability issues

Hi everyone,

When researching the s2k I found on the whole it got great reviews and that being a Honda that the quality of engineering is/would be second-to-none.

However this weeks Autocar ranks the s2k as only 6/10 - I'm used to some pundits not liking it for the 'snappy handling on the edge', 'not direct enough feedback to the steering'....but this one openly questioned reliability issues and that it wasn't 'up to usual Honda bullet-proof' standards....

...and after reading some of the stuff on this site re: gearboxes, clutches, flaky paint I'm a little worried.

I love he car and don't want to be a downer but I'd like to know just how gentle I should be with the car in future.....as I don't mind paying for maintenance but put it this way, that red-line needs abusing on a regular basis.....

There are exceptions that prove the rule, they had a pup (like one or two in here) but the main problem was the garage who did the repairs made an arse after they wrapped it in the wet like many have and don't like that fact. They had an obstructive gearbox but knacked it rather than getting it seen to, a tow eye cover fell out (it does this in parking nudges) and a fuse blew on the stereo.

I've had a flat battery, I've also built an excellent relationship with my dealer and I'm on first name terms with them all there, I've had many bits replaced under warranty with out any of them being failures, that many people have been obstructed by their dealer / Honda, but my dealer works hard to keep me happy and these problems are well known and if the dealer tries hard enough Honda UK will stump up.

Flaky paint I only ever read about in the US forum for some reason.

Don't sweat it if it is going well, you have the 90,000 mile / 3 year warranty to fall back-on.

thanks - sounds much more like it...the moral being make sure the local dealership knows what it's doing....

I think s2ki UK would be a great forum to get some profiles of the various UK dealerships so we can judge - using real-life examples - which dealerships are best.

Then we can all vote with our wallets and as a group of 100+ owners Honda UK might actually realise they can't treat a s2k like a 1.4 civic...and they might actually give mechanics some special training!

- maybe start a thread per main dealership that anyone with direct servicing experience of can contribute to......

I'm doubly worried about Avonvale in Stratford now!

cheers

Sadly most dealers don't. I have five dealers within a sensible distance. Two are dangerously incompetent, one doesn't have a clue (sells 4 cars a year), one is too busy to help (but highly recommended), the other doesn't seem to want any customers (so I'm told). It looks like I will need to drive up to London to get my car fixed.

I think they are specially trained. I've talked to one guy who's a Honda alarm specialist, who did not know that the alarm operates the boot release. It was no good asking him why mine wasn't working right.

This is already in hand, see the thread dealer list The trouble is that I don't really think that the bad dealers actually care what owners think. The way to a dealers heart, so to speak, is by making a written complaint to Honda.

I agree, but they had the same problem as many people here ... the incompetent dealer.

I don't think that you will need to be particularly gentle to the car, many of the faults are design and not wear related. I guess my advice is to choose your dealer with extreme care and when buying inspect every inch of the car on delivery.
