Default Boot release

Spoke to Honda mechanic a while ago and he looked at my car and stated that the boot release relay thingy was not there, hence the remote boot release not working. I think the part is

Ok, I'm now an expert on this!

Most 99MY and early 00MY do not have this relay; apparently it was an option at the time. Later 00MY and 01MY onwards have the relay as standard.

So, the answers to your questions are:

1. Yes, on your car you'll get two flashes but the boot won't open
2. No, you'll get nowhere trying to get Honda to foot the bill for the relay
3. Yes you can have the parts fitted yourself and the price (IIRC correctly) is around what I paid. I had the relay fitted by my dealer and it works well 90% of the time.

Because I always take a briefcase to and from the office and the car park is not well lit; it's been really worth the expenditure for me (a lot cheaper than it would have been respraying the boot-lid!)

Boot release is the one remaining niggle on my S. I have a standard Y reg with the standard Honda alarm/immobiliser. I use the boot at least twice a day and I use my car most days, so in the 6 months I have had the car I would guess it has been opened several hundred times. During this time I have tried most variations on timing the second depression of the button, but still achieve no better than a bout 10% success. As far as I can tell, if it does not open on the second depression, repeated pushing of the button will not work, so I use the key. And so I am starting to see some minor marks around the lock where I have missed in the dark/rain/gloom etc.
I have tried my local dealer (Cloverleaf, Ascot) who totally failed to improve my hit rate.
So after that long ramble, to my questions:
  • Am I less successful than most in releasing my boot?
  • Has anyone improved their success through dealer intervention? If so, what did they do?
  • Has anyone cracked the secret of timing to improve hit rate, or is there some other factor?

All suggestions gratefully received,

Seem to get a 90+% hit rate now. Think it's all in the timing.
Never used the key to open it - always re-lock and try again - not amusing when it's p***ing down - but better than scratches

hi all

I have an 02 car and so far my sucess rate is about 100%. I press on the button for the second time when the indicator light is still lit after switching off my alarm. When I do this the boot opens evrytime. I don't know if things are different in the new model but it is working fine on this car.

Cheers

I hadn't tried that, Rahul (I've always waited for the lights to go out). But I have just tried it with the following result...

press to unlock and, whilst the indicator lights are still lit, immediately press it again.... nothing happens.

press to unlock and immediately count, "And one and two" pressing the button a second time on "Two" (and the lights will still be lit) and the boot opens. And it worked 6 out of 6 times like this

Hey Paul

As I may have hinted before RTFM - failing that, Pete's method works for me.

I have found the the success rate is inversely proportional to the number of spectators though
