It's definitely not the tyres, - no wheel spin whatsoever.

The front brake discs are pretty new... - maybe it's those??!

The smell isn't fishy or eggy... - just a hot metal type smell!

I don't mind the smell, - if that's the characteristic, - then brill, - i just don't want to be worrying that there's something wrong

A burnt plastic smell, like a plastic bag got melted on the exhaust or catalytic converter
could be the culprit for some of the drivers above...

But what else could explain it on my brother-in-law's car?
It happened after normal drive of 30 minutes and then parking in the garage.

I made a visual inspection from the sides of the car but saw no evidence of the above situation.
(although I don't have a lift for a full inspection underneath...)
The smell has occurred on two separate occasions with a non-smelly drive and park in-between.

I'm a retired mechanic - I know what a burnt clutch or burnt brakes smell like...same with burnt
antifreeze, burnt oil or brake fluid...

Holy thread resurrection!

Does the car have an after market exhaust? Could be the rear bumper getting hot?

Judging by the driving style description I would guess the problem has solved it's self by now.................... He's had seven years to write it off!

Mine smells lile burnt hair after some spirited VTEC'ing.

Almost every time.

I liken it to the smell of fireworks (in particular bangers!), the guy in front has to be on it for best effect though

i tested a car that gave an oily smell during vtec, seller said it was normal but I walked. The car I ended up buying doesn't make any smell.

I get funny odours every time I leave Hay-on-Wye along the B4348 to Bredwardine....almost like scratch 'n' sniff, just drive that road using 2nd, 3rd & 4th gear....the 2000's natural habitat....
