Has anyone ever bought a number plate from this site, if so, what paperwork do you need, where do you send it and whats the total costs and time involved in getting the old plate off your car and the new one on?? Also what happens to your old number??

Off what site ??

Old plate goes back into the general pot unless you keep it on retention.

The seller sends you the retention certificate.

You send that to the DVLA with details of the car you want to apply it to and that car's V5. There's a fee payable (

This site doesn't sell reg plates. Members of ski might. Don't buy from anyone who isn't a member as it is less secure.

When I put the private plate onto my car, in the days when you could go into a regional DVLA office in person and do it there and then, they said to do it as quickly as I could.

When I took the plate off, by which time you could only do it by post to the DVLA, I waited for the new V5 to come back - not least in my case since it had been registered from new with the private plate and so I didn't know what number would be applied to it.

Even if you have an old reg, there's no guarantee you will get it back so you'll have to wait for the new V5C to find its way back to you.
