Check the Oil, if its low the previous owner may not have been vigilant in this very important area. Check for gearbox/clutch problems as some of the earlier cars suffered problems, saying that my 2001 will whine a little in 2nd or 3rd when decelerating but it really is nothing, if it doesnt sound bad it probably isnt.

If your going for a 99 car then check it has had the recall work done, I think there have been 2 recalls, seatbelt and tonneua cover. Ensure its been reguarly serviced. Its difficult to say try to avoid a car thats been thrashed as its unlawful not to own one of these cars and not give it what for, just check the engine sounds good, is responsive and doesnt pile out plumes of smoke.

Also pay attention to the wheels, my 2001 doesnt suffer pitting problems but a lot of owners of cars upto 2002 model have reported wheel corrosion.

Good Luck

Coincidentally mine's for sale

With all the mods, FSH etc.

PM me & I can give you all the info. My dealer is taking it in PX for a nice new one at the end of May unless I sell beforehand.

I bought my Sep 2000 model from a dealer last month....13k miles, cd changer, wind deflector...test drove it twice - got the windshield price down from 22k quid to 20.5k.....my research found dealer residuals on used s2k's sky-high so I think I got a fair deal....private sales tended to be 1-2k cheaper or even as expensive as via a dealer!!!..the odd 18k (v/w reg) bargains around tho'...could be lemons tho.....now the 2002 edition is out you can also use that as leverage on previous models...but don't expect much!!
