I couldn't get a reasonable insurance quote for it.....my current insurers wouldn't do it, I have zero no claims as I'm a company car driver, so I have to have a 2 car policy with the wife.
Also have a GOOD look around, check the panel fit etc. Make sure you know what you are getting.
It was hard to walk away from.....It looks sooooo good. But wasn't for me.

your insurer wouldn't quote on a 2008 model but did quote on a 2005 model (presumably, as that is what you bought) - how weird...

The car just didnt seem quite right....but I'm no expert.
The boot doesn't sit flat and passenger door and rear wing panel gaps are wrong....
When you look down the shot lines of the passenger side it's. ....not right.

Mines Cat C repaired and I got insurance no problem at all. It only cost £80 on top of what I was paying for my 1993 CRX Del Sol! I was amazed. And value wise, they said it's worth around 6K, even as a Cat C. As a rule of thumb, the asking price should be around 30% less than an HPI clear car. Mine was actually more than 30% cheaper, but then the roof does need to be re-covered, so I had to factor that in. I was very sceptical about buying a Cat C car. My first S2000 was a Cat D, and one of the rear quarters had been replaced. Just watch for bad welds where the panel joins the sill at the back of the doors. They are prone to bubbling and rusting. As others have said, pay attention to the shut lines. But don't be put off buying a repaired car. It's a cheap way into S2000 ownershiip, and the only way I was able to afford an '04 facelift with 46K on the clock!

Any ideas what the reasoning is behind insurance companies’ not quoting / loading policies for written off cars?
Is it because the quality of the repairs cannot be guaranteed?
I seem to remember that some asked for engineers reports in the past.
Just curious.

I think my insurer wouldn't quote because it was one of these cheapo online jobbies. Their business model is to just quote for standard low risk people and cars.
I did manage to get quotes, but as I have no noclaims of my own, was stuck with a 2 car policy through wife's insurance. (13 years noclaims....70%)
I don't have a problem with CAT D cars on the whole. If the work was done correctly it would be fine....that's why I took the time to go and look at this one.

Boot fit not as much of an issue as you might think - it really easily goes out of alignment. We closed ours onto a tightly packed boot the other week and now it sits proud on the one corner and is letting water in - grrr. Gotta adjust the hinges back!
