Default Cold rattle

Following on from Loftusts' fine thread, I've noticed a couple of posts of rattle whilst the engine is cold, this seems to be a trend on loads of Honda engines. My S2000, the wifes Jazz, and my old CRX, and is often caused by noisy valve lifters. the symtom is a TCT like rattle but only when cold and is also noticeable when changing up gear. Many posts in the USA (various forums) talk about stripping and cleaning the lifters but this stuff is definatly worth a first try. I've just done the wifes Jazz (36K miles) and the S (39K miles) and both have been scilenced.
Good old Wynns!

The valves in the S2000 are not hydraulic, they are adjustable. Why not just get them checked and adjusted correctly to eliminate the rattle? I'm not so sure putting additives in our engine is a good idea as it says in the workshop manual strictly not to do so. Hopefully yours will be okay though.

The stuff you've put in is only a temporary fix and the rattle will come back soon.

Sorry not being clear, none of the Honda engines mentioned have hydraulic lifters but this stuff works by clearing muck out of oil passageways so give a faster flow of oil around the engine. The cold rattle is cured and can only slow engine wear as a result, Honda will tell you all sorts of things not to put in the engine to avoid warrenty claims and increse service revenue, dosn't mean its bad for the engine. but my decision, will let you know when the engine goes '08.

What stuff is that rich?

I've heard that that snow form took out rons engine in an old car he had.

I've always wondered if I should use something like this in my old engine as it's covered a lot of miles, but frightened it may cause more harm than good?

More than that, snake oil tends to gum up VTEC pistons & return springs.

Would you like to try Unca Nick's Patent Turbo Bearing Enhancer Lotion? That'll do them all some good.

I knew I'd get flamed for this post, all I will say is.I've treated three Hondas with this stuff all three are still alive and quieter than befor treated, no cold rattle.
I'ts better than some forums that recomend taking a liter of oil out and replacing it with diesel fuel!!!

It's not about being flamed, but you are giving advice that could potentially lead to someone's engine popping. Your intentions are well meant, but some would argue unfounded and potentially dangerous and that point of view is being aired. Personally, I would take the cautious advice being suggested here and not put the fluid in my engine.

Sounds like you need to get your clearances done. That Wynns stuff really is only temporary, but will be useful for the cause short term.

Car '09 just under 15k miles from new and I had suspected I had the rattle when cold syndrome - this morning at 8 degrees, it was quite noticeable although went almost immediately.

I'm always careful on start up allowing it to tick over for a mo' to get the oil pressure up so it isn't as if it has been hammered from cold

looks like a warranty job in the making
