Cedric, just had a phone call from our technical director to say that our server is out of action temporarily (co-location got hit by storms in Scotland yesterday) so he can't receive any email. Still it seems like you have all the help you need now!

Andy:

It's a 'Surfboard' SB4100 Cable modem.

Pete:

Thanks, I am indeed humbled by the assistance I'm getting here!

Just to add some more detail.

With Blueyonder at least, the MAC address of the machine or network card plugged in to the cable modem has to be registered with Blueyonder. The engineer will do this when they first install the system, after that, you can register a few more with them (I think maybe 4).

If you change your connection from one computer to another, It can take a while (apparently up to 24 hours in some cases) for the connection to start working again, even if you have registered the MAC address of the new machine.

This is why using a router box, or always routing through a single PC, is a good idea.

Thanks Dinsdale:

It seems the router box is the best way to go doesn't it?

I think what I'll do is e-mail Blueyonder Techinical Support and find out what, if anything they can do for me. I suspect I may not like the answer, particularly the cost! If that's the case I'll probably end up doing my own 'thaing'.

Andy W:

P.C. World staff are great aren't they. You're lucky if you can find the one guy they usually employ who knows anything at all. I was round there recently and asked one of the red shirts walking about a couple of minor technical questions and got very embarassed apologetic "Not sure about that" replies. I said "Never mind" and the guy said "Anything else I can help you with Sir?" (As though he'd actually already helped me with something! ) I said I needed to get some writable CD's, at which point he looked enormously relieved that I'd asked him something he could actually answer, and made a big show of directing me to where they were!

Priceless!!

CT, It looks like the cable modem you have should be able to support multiple PCs, but this depends on how Blueyonder have configured this. Details of the cable modem can be found here [URL=http://www.gi.com/sb4100.html]SURFboard

Cedric,

I would advise not talking to Blueyonder about your desire to connect multiple machines. They generally frown on it as it's not officially supported. If you are lucky, you might be speaking to somebody who understands it, but the odds are against it.

I would recommend just doing it.

Hi Cedric,

Yes it can be done, and I do it!

It looks like you have a pile of help already, but if you get stuck I can walk you through it step by step.

Just drop me a line if you need the help.

Mark.
