As I said my desktop machine is connected directly to my cable modem so it acts as the gateway. On this machine I installed WinProxy by Ositis. It takes about 5 minutes to setup and runs pretty well out of the box. It will generate some text files on setup telling you how to setup your other systems and how to get web, email etc working on all systems. It's not too hard.
Muz, it never seems too hard when you're looking back does it? You tend to forget the cursing and burning the midnight oil bits.

I'm pretty self sufficient on my stand alone system having built and upgraded my own machines for quite a few years, but internet and networking stuff is pretty new to me.

For anyone who's interested in doing anything similar, a nice bonus of the Linksys router I've installed is that it gives total protection from intrusion. I ran this link which Scrooger provided earlier in the thread www.grc.com (Run the 'Shields Up' utility) It seems I'm now operating in total Stealth Mode and my system is totally invisible and providing the best security currently available!

Unfortunately, like any firewall or anti-virus, it's only secure, until someone has broken through it Please make sure that you follow whatever steps are required to keep it updated and also apply any Windows / IE security patches as required.

Yes, the guy on the Shields Up site does make the point that what he can't do today, he may well be able to do tomorrow!

Thanks, that will be after Managing a Win2000 network Haven't looked at Exchange for years, so it will be an experience. Still, it only took about two weeks to learn 2000 server and pass

Just wait for your CCIE exams
Not sure if I shall go for that or CNE first. The trouble is I've been in the industry far too long, but until now never needed any technical qualifications. These days it seems a pre-requisite to any job

Thank God I Saw The Light and went back into development
But don't Microsoft have the MCSD for that???

Certification is a way of showing potential clients and employers how good you are at passing exams!

MCSD, pah I spit on your MCSD (shameful rip off of Python)

I went down the Java Route, now I'm a Rational Certified Consultant & BEA Certified Consultant!

CNE is Certified Novell Engineer, CCIE is Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert (the end of a long road after CCNA and CCNP). Theres a BIG difference.

Without wanting to dishearten those studying for MCSE, I don't think the certification has the value it once did. Theres too many 'paper MCSEs' out there. I completed my MCSE 4 years ago and I'm almost too embarrassed to mention it now.
