Computer Question??
UPDATE
O.K. I've just been to P.C. World and bought the LINKSYS BEFSR41 Version2, 4 port router box. It's the none radio version which wasn't in stock and we decided not to go that route for the time being anyway, to keep things as simple as possible, and to avoid bunging another

Well just to let you know that after two nights of buggering about with this router box, I can report success. I'm posting this from the laptop.
Just don't anyone say Mac Address to me for a day or two!
Thanks for all your good advice!

I'm currently half way through a 900 page self-study book on Windows XP. I think the only thing worse than IP configuration and MAC address is NTFS file permissions

Glad to hear it's all working
I wish we could get broadband around here, but mains gas is still a recent technological advance in this area

Here's how I run my network.
I run 2000 on my 'gateway' machine and '98 on my other desktop and '98 on my notebook. All systems can access the Net using the cable modem.
In brief... I have 2 network cards in my desktop machine. One is setup for the cable modem and uses the TCPIP protocol, the other for the local network using the NetBios protocol.
(I use NetBios for local networking only. i.e. I have unbound the TCPIP protocol from the network card I use for my local network. This, amongst other things, makes it a little harder for intruders to try and access your network from the Net via TCPIP.)
As I said my desktop machine is connected directly to my cable modem so it acts as the gateway. On this machine I installed WinProxy by Ositis. It takes about 5 minutes to setup and runs pretty well out of the box. It will generate some text files on setup telling you how to setup your other systems and how to get web, email etc working on all systems. It's not too hard.
Winproxy has some virus filtering and various other goodies built in but you want to run a firewall (like ZoneAlarm) on each seperate system as well.
Check this site out for more info. It's an Aussie site but it has some general FAQs that apply to any cable connection.
