Default A couple of things...

Hey! All...

(1) I have been checking the oil (with my brother looking over my shoulder) on a regular basis, since I got the car.

Last weekend, as usual, check it and found I had used 2Xs (as indicated on the dip stick) so topped it up with the recommended amount (1X on dip stick = 100ml), right?

Well, now when I start the car, I get a scent like that of a burning candle. Is this normal? My brother suggested I post this, he may add to this post later this evening.

(2) For those looking for cheap insurance in London, I've just purchased what I think is reasonable cover from Noel Dazely (Tele: 01276 25999). It was

Welcome to the board. I'm sure someone on here will be able to answer your oil question. Have you had a look at the tech faq yet, it can be found along with other good information in the Important information thread and is definitely worth a read.

Enjoy your car

Shiv - bet you dribbled some oil on the cam cover when filling and it burnt off when you got the engine hot.

Hi shivani

Its not unusual with my car, that when I open the garage in the morning there's a faint smell of hot metal and oil This is usually after the occasional good run traffic permitting, where it gets hot and makes the 'tinking' sound as it cools. If you're saying its just on startup though then its not that.

If you're in the first couple of thousand miles then the car can make all sorts of smells from rotten eggs to fish

Why on earth do you have to leave the keys with security If they need to move your car for some emergency or other then get them to ring you. Are they insured for a Group 20 car?

Hi Moor Deybe

It's only done ~1800 miles so maybe I'm still going through the range of smells. Figured the "tinking" sounds was that of it cooling, stilll a bit wary of the burning candle smell. Will pay more attention this weekend.

Had a bit of fun with it last night...waiting at the lights just after Stockwell Station in South London, (top down even though it was dark and a little chilly), a yellow Punto sport or something pulled up and checked out the car a few times, lowering his window and winking/thumbs up...so thought I'd show him what it could do...loving it ) How long does the grinning last?!

As for the...they hadn't touched it - checked the mileage )
