Default detailing/paintwork question

hopefully some of you detailing guys might be able to put your sugestions forward on this one:

i'm planning todo some de-rusting on my S, and the thing thats really putting me off is the spraying after. specifically the blending/smoothing stage.
someone posted a 3M youtube video recently and they sugested about £200 worth of sanding/polishing kit - which i dont want to spend the time or money on.

would i be able to hand-smooth overspray areas (fine wet&dry/cutting compound/polishing compound) or is it a job soly for machine?

the area im fixing is about a hand length, so spray area is maybe 3x that..?

I learnt a trick from a mobile guy some years ago, when you mask up where you need to blend in make the mask a curve its much easyer to blend back also he used draught excluder tape so the mask was 5mm away from the panel so much less over spray, obviously not to be done at panel line areas!
As for rubbing back etc, look up Xd's threads what he dosn't know about detailing, you don't need to know!

I'd try an aggresive clay bar on overspray first, has always worked for me
