So what diff oil has AB and the like been putting in for their diff changes? ie, what is the best type for someone to buy if they were considering a S diff oil change (handled by themselves), ie me.

I don't trust Honda dealers at all. Crown Honda is the better option though. During my last service, the tech was going to add fully synthetic to the car - I told him that it's not recommended until after 10,000 miles but he continued to reassure me that it was the preferred oil. He went and checked and sure enough admitted his fault.

I've changed the fluids at 5500 miles- diff with Redline Gear oil 75W90 and the gearbox to redline MTL 70W80. Both changes came in at aroud

Chesh

You need a 23mm flat ring spanner to remove the diff fill plug - it is not too common a size. You cannot get a socket on the plug. Someone here drained the dif then discovered this problem. Short of turning the car over - bit of a bummer!

Of course you should use new washers for both the drain and fill plugs on gearbox and diff.

Biggest challenges are: a) finding something that lets you squeeze oil into the diff and gearbox through and up a 200mm of 5/6/7 mm dia plastic pipe. You cannot get 'above' the filler holes to pour oil in, and b) having the car level while you are under it to get the oil levels right. Other than that - for a man of your background - a simple stroll in the park in the old KFPs.

If you get really stuck, simply print the above picture scaled to achieve 23mm across the flats at the ends, onto paper. Stick the printed image onto a sheet of chrome vanadium steel uisng a liquid rubber adhesive, then, using a plasma cutter, cut around the outline. This will get you out of trouble if you do not have the right spanner to hand.

Thanks for the update. So what do people use to squirt the oil in? A bottle and a tube, a bit like a brake bleeding kit?

Getting oil back into the fill holes is very easy with an oil can - you can buy them from Wheelhouse or any DIY shop - I had to fill a 500ml can a few times to fill the diff and the gearbox - make sure you buy two.

Old thread I know but changed my diff oil with Castrol EPX 80W-90. The car is at 9000 miles and going in for it's first service next week. The job was dead easy to do and the old oil was really black and mucky. The only concern I have with this oil is that it isn't synthetic but rather mineral. It is GL5 spec though. Anyone care to suggest another oil which I can pick up? I was thinking of Mobil1 75W-90 but couldn't find any.

Also had Event Mobile come around for new fronts and they did a great job.
