difficult to go to the first gear

Thanks to all the suggestions - looks like it is so far a £10 solution (a bottle of DOT4)
No harm to check around the slave cylinder as well, that would leak onto the ground under the gearbox. The master would be seeping down underneath where mine did, some went down underneath in the engine bay and some inside in the footwell.
