Default Do i need an amp ?

Hi everybody

Recently installed Alpine HU 9855R Modifry DCI (speed controlled wired) Alpine ipod adapter.

My question is i have bought a set of JL XR650.CSI component speakers which i am going to replace the stock speakers in the doors will i get ok results with just the head unit powering them or will i need to have a seperate amp to power them?

If i can get away with just swapping the speakers over to start off with then i will.

Anybody able to give me any advice ?

Ok to start with those comps are rated at 70watts rms and the Apline puts out 50watts max, in reality that 50watts max will be somthing like 12/15 watts rms.
This means that the HU at full volume will be pushing out a nasty distorted/clipped amplified signal. After a while pushing a clipped signal in to any speaker will kill it, even at low power levels. Simple way to fix this is not go so much on the loud knob but roof down at 90 (kph ) thats going ot be hard to resist as its going to hard to hear not running at full volume.

So yes i would add an amp if you want to be nice to you comps and still hear the system with the roof down.

Also i see you have a 05... DONT put the tweeter in the stock locations. Put them up on the A-pillers.
The stock door mounted location has got to be one of the worst places to put tweeters i have ever seen (much like the new Mini).

I was in the same dilemma, after advice from here I went for the amp, a genesis amp fitted inside the spare wheel.

I figured if it was worth doing its worth doing properly
If your paying to get it fitted it works out better value to get it fitted in one go rather then the speakers + HU and then the amp afterwards.

I am impressed at 125 leptons with the roof down I can still hear those tunes , the most impressive thing is the quality of the sound its amazing I can hear tones/melodies in tracks I had never heard before, not sure if it

I used the stock tweeter points on my 04 and they could be a lot better. Had them on my A pillar on 00 car and that was far better!
