Who is going to check for type approval of a bloody cat?
I bet no MOT tester could care less so long as the numbers are right and you pay your bill.
Where i live most of them will not MOT it, all you do is simply plug in another car to get round it in the tailpipe but still have the S connected.

I've heard a few might pass it using the above method .

Is the tester going to remove the heat shield from the OEM cat to look at the writing underneath or are they just going to memorise every OEM cat for every vehicle and year .....

We will still supply universal catalysts but these must not be fitted to road cars if registered after March 1st 2001. Each catalyst will be marked 'Ilegal to supply to type-approved vehicles first used on or after 1st March 2001'.

Precisely what are the benefits of decatting or using a fast flow cat?

From what I understand the gains are minimal to nothing.

Yes a straight pipe is cheaper than a cat that complies with the law, as appears to be third party sports cats such as the Berk HiFlow, but is it really worth all the hastle and ball ache swapping said items for every MOT or risking greasing the palm of some MOT monkey?

What am I missing here?

I love the French and their attitude to to this type of sh1te
They do indeed have a rebellious attitude, but they get seriously screwed at MOT time as they plug a reader into the ODBII port when doing emissions testing and the data is automatically sent to some big iron brain somewhere.

It is against the law to do any modifications to your car in France and this recent development has made it even harder to 'get away with it'.

I believe all cars past a certain date must have a cat, if the inspector sees just a pipe he can fail it even if its passing the emissions test.
as for what all the fuss is about
a 200 cell free low cat will gain around 6 hp over a standard oem cat and a test pipe will flow another 2 over the sports cat, thats based on tests done on a civic type R. its one of the cheapest ways to get a little more power there is no induction package that comes close to this for the same money, so for NA its a cost effective mod, there will be people on here that say they dont notice the difference etc but thats more to do with the fact it makes no change to the noise, a 6 hp rise is hard to detect its only 2.5% increase but if you want these small gains this is one that does what it says on the tin
