Default Engine Light

I had the engine light come on this week. But after a few miles of gentle driving the light has gone out without any intervention.

So I've pulled the codes out using an Autel MaxiScan MS300 (http://www.auteltech.com/ms300.htm) which I bought on ebay (it seems to work a treat, well worth £24, imho). This is what I found:

P0300 – Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301 – Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0302 – Cylinder 2 Misfire Detected
P0303 – Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
P0304 – Cylinder 4 Misfire Detected

Not done anything to the car recently (apart from have a new battery). The car seems to drive fine, although I've been very gentle since the light was on.

Anybody had a similar experience?

Check the battery is secure.

Otherwise have a look in the Tech FAQ on here - I wrote a guide to diagnosing faults.

Could be valve clearances / sensor problems etc.

Check all plugs are all in properly as a first step. I had number 1 plug work loose and had the same codes on all cylinders.

Thanks. Checked the battery and it is secure. I'm actually thinking that it might be worthwhile to just change the plugs. They've not been changed in the last 2 years, but it does v. low miles. I had the valve clearances set at the last service, but I guess that could still be the problem.

In the meantime, I might just clear the codes and see if they come back. Maybe get it warm and try a vtec to see what happens...
