Default EPS light on, no power steering

Hi guys,

Today I got into my car to drive home and noticed no power steering. I then noticed the EPS light on the dash. I turned off the engine and turned it back on again and the light disappeared and the power steering was restored.
I managed to fuel up without the EPS light coming back on until I tied it later tonight out of curiosity after reading some threads on it.
This has happened out of the blue so it caught me off guard when the steering became very stiff.

I'll wait till tomorrow to dig out my ODB reader to see what the fault codes are.

Anyone else come across this? Or have ideas where to start looking?

Any pointers or advice would be most welcome.
Cheers.

Keith.

I couldn't wait till tomorrow and managed to dig out my ODB2 reader. Odd thing is, it doesn't report any codes being raised, so I'm not too sure where to go from here apart from adopting an "elimination" process.

I had a quick check of wires and cables, but couldn't see anything untoward but it was hard to see much in the dark, but hopefully get a better look in the day time.

More likely a power thing than EPS failure.

Has the car been parked for a while?

You won't be able to pull the codes on a regular code scanner, you need a higher end model like a snap on, launch, etc.

No point in troubleshooting the system unless/until you do the simple reset. Instructions are in the library. Move on from there if it fails.

I made the mistake of turning the steering wheel with the engine running while the car had all four wheels off the pavement. The EPS stopped working after this. Reset cured it. If it doesn't work you're no worse off than now.

Not experienced this with an S but I have with other cars and on each occasion it has been a problem with the alternator.
