Freezing point problem
Problem solved. Replaced ECU and the past few mornings, including the -3*C this morning, had no start up problem at all.
To sum up, the CEL code was showing the ECU was at fault, the faults being a misfire when the temperature outside was at close to freezing point, and the engine not being able to climb past 3000rpm. Eventually, when warm, the engine needed to be re-started and the revs would return to normal. Economy went down badly and it warmed up quicker (yeah, go figure?)
Thanks for all of the help.

I guess the ECU was adverse to the cold and not the sensors.
A first to my knowledge I have to admit, one to remember.
As an aside, the signal to the dash display drivers is analogue IIRC and output from the ECU.
If the electronics were unstable when cold, probbaly just overdriving the output signals.
That may have been the same for every signal it sent out hence the crap running!
