You got 280 miles out of a tank in the same conditions? What am I doing wrong??
I really am no expert here - but maybe we ought to establish just what a tank full of fuel is. Mine takes around 48 litres/10 1/2 gallons, which means I was probably cutting it pretty fine last time, I filled up within 10 miles of red bar illuminating.
My Dad used say that a fuel tank size is never standard, I don't know if there's any truth in this these days, that together with a fuel guage that could be telling you the tank is emptyer (if there's such a word) than it is could be the underlying issue. Maybe you ahven't got a problem, but saying that I wouldn't advise driving on the red bar!

Mine's very odd as well; it's an 04 and seems to use fuel while parked up overnight, and the last quarter down to empty light lasts about 20 miles, meaning i can get about 240-250 before the empty light comes on normal driving (not FUN driving)
Petrol is denser when cold; i.e., it fills more volume when it's warm.
As the car warms up, the petrol tank fills.
Yet another excuse for a dodgy fuel gauge:
Can usually do 230mi, then crawl along at 3krpm for another 20 with that blasted light on!
