Fumes Inside Car

There is a tank venting system, otherwise you wouldn't be able to get any squirt down the neck!
Vapours are supposed to be collected in an activated carbon trap under the bonnet. These are sucked into the engine and combusted from there.
It has to have a pressure release override system. On a hot day after a thrash, One gets a strange moaning/moo-ing noise from the filler area!

It is a charcoal filter. It absorbs petrol fumes when the engine is shut off. Then, when the engine is re-fired, the fumes that were stored in the charcoal filter are re-used. This prevents the fumes from going into the atmosphere.

Always thought the charcoal thingy was just an American requirement.
I know it used to be that UK/Rest of the World engines always produced more bhp due to the emission control regs in the USA strangling the emgine.
Do we have the same level of regs here now? If so, does it mean I can unstrangle a few more horses by removing a few pipes?

.. and all these years later I did the same thing. Topped up the oil yesterday, began smelling fumes last night and this morning. Opened up the hood and there's the cap sitting where I put it. Amazing it didn't fly off somewhere.

Mine sheared off once. Went to check the oil in preparation for a trip up to JAE a couple of years ago and there's no cap. Drive very very gingerly to Ascot to the only dealership that had any in (I was in Reading at the time) and the new one wouldn't fit.
Turned out the thread from the old was still in the block. Never did find the other half.
