Default GPS and Data Loggers

Hi there,

I'm on the hunt for a new GPS Video Data Logger system for race and track days. I've been use to using the Race logic Video Vbox when racing but its a fixed kit and I need another set for the track cars I use whilst instructing and the VBox is a bit expensive at £1200-1600! Does anyone have any experience of any others?

Thanks.

Do you need playback at the circuit?

I believe the Harry's Lap Timer app for iPhone is good for that. http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Home.html

There is a Trainer edition for the iPad too http://www.gps-laptimer.de/Trainer.html

Harrys lap timer is a fantastic bit of kit for the price. The only thing you will need is an external GPS as the internal iPhone reciever is only 1hz

I have the Galaxy S3, is harrys system available on that? if so that might be worth looking at. I need a lot on the analysis side as well to compare driver data.... One thing I really liked about the racelogic system was the ability (once uploaded to the laptop) to have different driver data running side by side on video and with the braking and acceleration/speed tracking underneath basically showing where different drivers were getting on the power and at what speeds at corner entry, exit speeds etc...automatically showing splits etc... does it have this feature? Also, for the external GPS do you reccomend any particular one? Thanks for the help! Oh and yes Lovegroova playback at the circuit onto a laptop.

You could try Racechrono for Android, it's a bit basic at present (no OBD2 data for example) https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...hyb25vLmFwcCJd

I use the Torque App for my videos, along with Racerender to produce my videos https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...bC50b3JxdWUiXQ.. but that's not really a viable solution for "at the track" analysis.

I've just spotted this plug in for Torque - it looks pretty good: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...b3J0b3JxdWUiXQ..

this developer seems to have some good stuff for trackday enthusiasts https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...bC50b3JxdWUiXQ..

For GPS, I use a Qstarz 818XT. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Qstarz-BT-Q8...7641294&sr=8-3 though this is supposed to be excellent: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Garmin-Porta...7641364&sr=8-3

Thanks mate, very appreciated. I'm looking through them all now. It's good that a few of them are compatible with circuit tools! Can you send me a link to some videos you have using your apps?

I could add more stuff like a G-meter but the phone isn't stable enough on the mount I use.

There was an app called aLap which worked pretty well, sadly no longer in development, I used just the phone to make this vids

This is the downside to Video Vbox! Mine is so plumbed into the car it wouldn't be easy to take out and put back.

If you don't need video, a normal Vbox would work well. If not, my plan was to just use the iphone with a camera mount and one of the apps as a data logging thing.
