Checked the fuses- they're fine. I was just going to swap the ballasts over to check to see if this is the problem which i presume will work as they're the same both sides i presume? Anyway this is turning into a mission, set about removing the front bumper- simple enough in theory but the stupid screws at the top weren't budging. In the end after all day spent trying to remove them i had to buy an angle grinder to get them off and then use water pump pliers to get out the remaining stumps. Will have to wait until new years day to do a bit more tinkering and swap them over..

Good luck.
rich when you say relays which bits so you mean? Is this the wires going from ballast to bulb?

Right I've located the problem, would really appreciate a bit more help...

when I removed the ballast, water literally started pouring out. Basically water has been getting into the headlight and sitting on top of it, rusting away the connections. So...I'm gonna hunt the classifieds now for a second hand unit. My questions now are:

1. Can i run my car and use the sidelights safely without putting the old ballast back on for a few days whilst I get the replacement part i.e. What do i do with the cables that run to it? Can I just wrap them in insulating tape and secure them to something, would this be okay? Or just remove the fuse so no power is going to it- would this work?

2. If anyone can give me some pointers on where water/condensation commonly gets into the headlight units that would be great, just to give me some idea of where to look. Ive only got internet on my phone at the mo which is making searching on here a little tricky.

1) Given the voltages involved much safer without it if there's water around, but obviously not legal if you are unlucky enough to get pulled.

2) someone might have had the headlight cluster out to clean it and broken the seal, I've seen a thread on rear lights there must be something on headlights.

Will have a search and post up if I find anything.

Had a look there are a few threads from searching "headlamp condensation". they all say take the lamp out remove the bulb holders, use a hairdryer to clear out moisture and use clear silicone to seal any gaps you may find.

Have a look on ebay as you have yours out you can see what fitting it has and you are going to need one with the wiring I got one from HIDs direct but only one screw lined up so I used cable ties to hold it firmly in place, bit of a fag but it worked.

This is what I got-

The £30 ballasts in the Fore Sale section are facelift - I'm guessing from your sig you are pre-facelift.

Leaky headlights seems to be a fairly common issue - the solution is to bake the glue to loosen it around the lens then re-seal. TBH I think I'd try and skip the baking part and run some additional sealant around where the seal line for the lens/casing is. There's a guide on Ricks for taking the headlight lens off that might help http://www.ricks2k.com/info/instructions/diffuser.pdf
