MY04 has developed a whine coming from the Air Intake its very loud with the box lid off, she seems to be running OK temp etc all normal - any ideas??

they do whistle a bit with the airbox lid off, if its that sound its normal.

Never heard it before, whine was quite muted with the lid on, but is very loud when I took it of.

its the whistling of air going through the filter, so would have been muted by the airbox lid.

does it start at a certain mileage? just gone past 20k but defo did not happen before a couple of days ago!!

Put the air filter lid back on, it will go away.

As someone said, you are just hearing the induction noise at idle.

try taking the air filter off one of the pleats may be loose and acting like a reed.
