Sorry - goddamn Americanism crept in. I meant it felt like there was 'play' on & off the throttle in traffic. Like a won UJ or too slack a throttle cable. Only nothing that obvious was, obvious.

Could have been excess friction in the engine.

 

Depends how clever the ECU is as to whether it'll a) record an over-rev b) store it for long enough to be picked up. A number of different set ups and they don't always store enough info for long enough for a garage to find.

How long before the noise started did you over-rev the engine? I suspect it's either dropped a valve into the bore; or the valve will have been damaged and is sticking. The piston frees it up on the way back up the bore by clobbering it but it'll just get worse and worse until it drops and the engine goes bang.

I have one question though and that is why do dealers know sweet FA about engines? Metal contamination!!!! There's a friggin good reason you have an oil strainer pre-oil pump and then an oil filter before you get to the bearings. Almost every engine built will have metal contamination. It's nigh on impossible to get it all out of ever bit of the engine (although the gallerys are fairly critical obviously).

That said, if the engines been over-revved then there's probably significant damage to the head sub assembly and quite possibly the pistons too. If it hasn't and the bearings are going then the bottom ends pretty shafted and you won't be able to guarantee the condition of the cylinder head

05 engine with 02 ECU

Been fine

As AE has said try and get the engine with the clutch and gearbox, get yourself a S2 workshop manual and fit it yourself (its easy) or get a local HD to do it for you.
