Default Help please - replacement engine

Thursday night my car sounded like Satan gargling spanners so I had it towed home then to Honda next morning.

They have only just got round to looknig at it and have said they replaced the tensioner, it sounds better but still awful. They say there is probably (sounds to me like they haven't done a proper investigation) big end damage - bearings/crank shaft etc and do not recommend replacing parts due to problems with metal contamination. Upshot is they want to replace the lump entirely and are getting back to me with prices.

When I heard the noise I was prepared for thousands not hundreds but clearly do not want to pay out unnecessarily. So, do I:

1. take a chance on flushing engine and replacing parts?
2. get Honda to roger me silly for a new engine?
3. get a used one (04+ recommended?) and them to fit it?
4. tow it to the country and burn it?

I know there have been a few 'deaths' here recently, any advice please?

EDIT: 3 weeks ago i got a CEL and took it straight in. They said it was a misfire in cylinder 2 and swapped plugs and coils and it was ok. Is this related? Was there damage that could have been prevented - do I have a 'case'?

if you over revved it, then you will most likely have also damaged the valve spring retainers.

If you're going to rebuild the bottom end, bear this in mind as you don't want a subsequent engine blow up due to a failed valve spring retainer and the subsequent dropped valve.

When did your Honda warranty expire? No chance you can continue it over, leave the car off the road for a month or two then claim on it?

I personnally have never had a warranty on this car. I thought any extended ones had to be continuous?

i think the breakers will be the only way forward if they really think it will involve a new lump or major surgery. sorry.
