Default high beam headlight replacement

I apologize for posting this a second time, but the first was at the end of an old thread so I thought perhaps it had been missed.

Several have commented favorably on Philips Rally Bulbs for high beam replacements. But I see that Rally Bulbs are short lived at 100 hours, compared to thousands for oem halogen bulbs and claimed "life of the car" for HID conversion kits.

http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/hl-filament-bulbs.htm comments on short life of Rally Bulbs.

Can anyone comment on actual experience with Rally Bulb life?

----------------------------

Also has anyone researched or installed the high beam HID conversion on

http://www.autolamps-online.com/gasdischarge/index.htm?

If rally bulbs do fail often, the cost of HID conversion begins to look more attractive.

Hi

I have just ordered some Rally bulbs today. I have considered the point about the life of the bulbs and come to this conclusion. In the past 9 months of ownership I think I have had my Main Beam on for about 10 seconds + a few flashes, so I would expect them to last the life of the car. If not at least until I change for another car.

So don't waste your money, just get the bulbs

The amount of time you have the main beams on for is minimal.
You'd have to be using them for about 20 minutes per day to get through a set in a year. Even at this level of usage you'd have to own the car for about 15 years to match the cost of the HID upgrade. It just isn't worth it.

I can vouch for the Rally bulbs they are an excellent upgrade allowing you to see far more of the road in front of you.

Thanks. However I have a little different situation. Virtually all of my nighttime driving is high beam. And night means dark. Only the moon and stars, no street lights. I live far from any city. The three towns I shop at are 12, 23 and 30 miles away in different directions, and it's hilly so traffic doesn't come into view very far ahead.

I'm not sure what my total high beam time per year would be, but it's enough I would carry spares. I know on some winter month trips I have run the high beams for several hours in one day.

Anyway, I'd still like to hear from anyone who puts on more hours, and especially if someone has had an early failure.

There are other 100W and 130W H1 bulbs available. For example

These are much less expensive, but the one I tried seemed hardly any brighter then the oem. I guess you get what you pay for.
