Default How loud is 96db...

Ok I've just got a reply from Toada Europe about their cat back exhaust solution.

Hi Jason,

Thank you for your patience.

The system weighs around 13kg which is approximately 10kg lighter than
standard.
It is road legal in Japan and the UK at 96dB.
You can purchase it directly from us.
Please let me know if I can be of any more help.
So the question is - how loud is 96db loud? What is that comparable to? Anyone running an HKS or any other cat back system with similar specification?

How long is a piece of string (very good those of you who though twice the distance from the end to the middle...)?

It all depends on how the reading was taken.

Damage to the human ear starts at 85dB

Perhaps more importantly is what sone it is, but then manufacturers never seem to give this.

My single exit was 102dB, 96dB (if accurate) should get you on the UK circuits without a problem. The stock exhaust is high 80s, IIRC.

Depends if you are taking db or db(A), A refers the the A-weighting curve which is the sound level adjusted for how the human percieves the noise.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-weighting

96dbA is pretty quiet for an aftermarket exhaust really.

When I had an (old style) HKS Hiper on my first S2000, it was recorded at 96.4 dB on a static test at 75% max revs on an airfield track day. That compared with 95-ish for the OEM exhaust.

96 isn't loud and shouldn't pose too many problems for circuit driving unless the noise restrictions are particularly tight.

96 dB is the maximum allowed under the JASMA regulations in Japan.
