Default Intake advice

Have been thinking about changing the intake. So today I just thought I'd take the airbox lid off to see how it sounds. Well I like the sound with the throttle open. Not so keen on the constant whine/ whistle at idle. Also I know that just taking the lid off allows hot air to be sucked in rather than cold and can decrease performance. So... I was planning on changing the intake.
If anyone can give me feedback on the K&N Gen II I would be grateful. I know the sound is supposed to be similar to airbox lid off, is this true? Does it prevent heat soak kangarooing? And is performance at least as good as stock?
Advice regarding others would be appreciated, but I don't want an AEM due to risk of hydrolock (not many puddles around aty the moment though ) Although a snorkel may allow cold air in I guess ther's not much sound difference to stock.

All help appreciated
