Default A which Jack ? thread

So, I've looked at the usual Costco recommendations (not a member and not really worth joining for £25 to save £25 and they seem to not do the Alcan ones any more?), the SGS Engineering ones (all their nice 1.5T/2T Steel/Ali ones seem out of stock), Mchinemart (too pricey) and been thinking about the types with the single front roller as the tarmac on my drive isn't as smooth as a painted garage floor.

This is my favourite at the moment http://kandasupplies.co.uk/epages/TT...2low%20alli%22

I've seen a thread where someone was avoiding the single roller as a sign of "cheapness" but I only see it as an advantage with spreading the load and actually rolling when jacking the car - does anyone have opionions to the contrary ?

I also have this one in my sights too http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180832164601

I fully expect to have to do the usual drive onto a paving slab to reach the front centre jacking point even though I have OEM ride height - but being able to get under without having to do the pre-left would be a bonus !

I really don't want to be hitting the £150 mark, £100 is about the price I want to pay delivered - opinions please ?

I've come from a background of drifting, which obviously involves a lot of time using a jack! I would definitely steer clear of the likes of the single front roller types. One of my friends blew out 3 of the Clark jacks in no time before swapping to an Arcan. The Arcan ones have a lot of positive reviews from my experience, I've also been using an Arcan ally one for the last 6-7 years with no trouble at all despite it taking a battering. This would be my reccomendation:

Halfords were doing a really tidy package deal sometime last week

2 tonne jack
2 axle stands
2 wheel chocks
Under car creeper
Wheel brace and socket

All for 50 quid when reserved online

I've had the same jack for 7 years, done countless engine swaps and work on other cars, no grief at all. Just about fits under my lowered s

Thanks both for the experience and good to know the Arcan ones are obtainable, I may just have to bite the bullet and fork out the £150 - it's rather a lot for something I only use occasionally, but I suppose if you offset garage labour costs it pays for itself in the first use or two.

I have the remains of a Halfords one in my shed, it leaked oil once and now doesn't actually jack. It will fit under the sill but I really want something that'll definately read the diff jacking point and nearly reach the front centre location.

I already have four axle stands and a 6x8 shed that's pushing maximum capacity to have to be sparing about how I use the space

The ebay jack mentioned by Andy F is the same as I got from Costco earlier this year. I paid £30 less than that with Costco and I didnt join Costco as a member. You just need to agree to pay 5% more on the price shown on the site. Even then, with the 5% added it came in at £119 with free delivery.

The only bummer at the moment is that the site doesnt seem to have the Arcan jack in stock. The jack is also big, I got quite a shock when it arrived and saw the size of it. It is a lot of jack for the money.

I've got a Clarke 2tonne low jack. Was £100 and feels really sturdy. I feel so much safer using it than the previous jack I had.

I have the 3t Tonne Arcan one, which does exactly the job you describe (though I have to put one front wheel on a paving stone to get to the front centre jacking point).

it's a big time saver to be able to lift "half" the car at once which was not possible with my old Halfords jack that Tom describes above - the axle stands and chocks that came with it are very useful though.

Odd LG, lifted front and rear end of the S no qualms at all.

Hit and miss it seems! Lifted railway sleepers, coal burners and all sorts with mine! No grief at all.

Watch out now It'll fail next time I use it

Mine no longer even goes under the side jacking points as my car is so super low these days.

Either way, there is no way it could have reached either of the centre jacking points without fouling on the bumpers when trying to work the handle.

Looks like his one: http://www.halfords....tegoryId_255207
