I'd have thought you'd need to get some good advice on changing the cars geometry to keep the handling/tyre wear acceptable. A query in Under the Hood ought to get what you need.
There have been a lot of problems in the US with damaged differentials, but it seems to be mostly modded cars. I don't know if this is related, but I suspect that the angle of the drive shafts puts strain on the diff housing. I haven't looked recently, but it would be worth a search on the main forums.
You should search for this, but IIRC you can lower up to something like 25mm while still having enough adjustment in the suspension to keep to standard alignments. If you lower the car, have it aligned - proved the drop isn't too much, they'll be able to align it and you shouldn't have any tire wear problems.
I've lowered my car with Eibach springs, which is a one inch drop. The car looks much better IMO. I was looking at this weeks Autocar and the main picture of the S2K looks like its on stilts.
My car definately rides rougher but corners as if on rails (until you hit a bump ). The trade off for me is worth it. My car retains its standard alignment and doesn't feel any worse for it, although I am moving to the new UK 2002 alignment next month.
I installed HKS springs with Koni dampers. The ride was reduced by 29 mm. Although handling was improved the car was much less practical as it hit road humps and I couldn't get a jack underneath.
Take a look at the Mugen technical paper, they reccomend ride heights that are around 12mm off stock with a stronger spring rate. I have had Koni set up my suspension so I can achieve this ride height on the HKS springs. I have also had it set up to the '02 settings. It feels about the same as the reduced height but is much more usable on the street.
Be very sure before you change the springs as the dampers will probably need changing as they are a little 'bouncy' on the back anyway. Add up the total amount you think this will cost first before starting - although I think its the best mod I have made as it makes the power far more usable. I have also fitted Panther plus pads and they have a fantastic effect as well on stopping power.
This is what the Koni/ HKS set-up looks like:
Good luck - and get a manual as you need to torque up the suspension correctly and preload the dampers when you re-assemble.
