I used a full tank of fuel and that got me 320 miles. This was driving to the north, sticking to 70mph and that works out at 34mpg on V-Power. Very happy with that :-D

You'll get much closer to 50 MPG with a diesel hatchback, so the delta would actually be greater. 50 MPG would cost just £1164... ~ £850 less.

I don't know your holiday entitlement, so we'll say it's 20 days per annum. The are 8 Bank Holidays this year too.

So...

52 weeks x 5 working days = 260 working days.

260 - (8 Bank Holidays + 20 days holiday entitlement) = 232 working days total this year.

You're doing 40 miles per day. 40 x 232 = 9280 miles per annum (of course, this is excluding weekends and other trips etc., but let's just stick to working days for now).

--------------------

You're seeing 28 MPG with Shell Regular.

9280 / 28 = 331.42857142857142 gallons per annum.

There are 4.54609 litres per gallon. Litres x gallons per annum = 1506.7041142857142 litres total.

At £1.33 per litre, that's an annual fuel bill of (1506.7041142857142 x £1.33)

£2003.916472

or rounded up

£2003.92

--------------------

You're seeing 34 MPG with Shell V-Power.

9280 / 34 = 272.94117647058823 gallons per annum.

There are 4.54609 litres per gallon. Litres x gallons per annum = 1240.8151529411764 litres total.

At £1.42 per litre, that's an annual fuel bill of (1240.8151529411764 x £1.42)

£1761.9575171764705

or rounded up

£1761.96

--------------------

If you buy a stinky, nasty oil burner, let's say you'll be seeing 40 MPG.

9280 / 40 = 232 gallons per annum.

There are 4.54609 litres per gallon. Litres x gallons per annum = 1054.69288 litres total.

At £1.38 per litre, that's an annual fuel bill of (1054.69288 x £1.38)

£1455.4761744

or rounded up

£1455.48

--------------------

Summary:

Let's ignore the Shell Regular figure, because you shouldn't really be using that (a higher RON is much preferred for smoother running), plus it's obvious that by using V-Power you'll be saving anyway.

The fuel bill to run the S2000 per annum =

£1761.96

and for a diesel =

£1455.48

which means a saving of

£306.48

Three-hundred quid is three-hundred quid. It's a fair chunk. I'd like to have an extra three-hundred quid at the end of the year, but the question is... are you willing to trade your S2000 for a boring, ten-a-penny Teutonic Tractor for the sake of three-hundred quid? The answer should be NO!

Excellent post but let's face it, the diesel calculation is a bit off...if my crap old 2001 Clio 1.5DCi regularly did 53mpg with a sticky injector and smoked more than a coal fired power station on start up then its more like this:

9280/50 = 185.6

844 litres at £1.38 = £1164.38 annual cost.

An annual saving of £597.58

Now that doesn't seem a lot but it depends on the OP's monthly financial position.

S2000 @ £1761.96 / 52 = £33.88 per week or £147.23 per month based on 30.5 days for an average month
DERV doing 50mpg @ £1164.38 / 52 = £21.39 per week or £97.30 per month based on 30.5 days for an average month

A monthly saving of £49.93

For some people that's a considerable amount to be saving each month.

I know if I look at my own personal situation my fuel bill halved running the diesel whilst I was rebuilding my S2000 and that's why I'm now choosing to run 2 cars. Although it doesn't save me any money, I will have the S2000 as an evening and weekend toy whilst having a diesel commuter which I don't have to worry about where I leave it parked, have the practicality of lugging things around etc as well.

What if you drive the diesel at the same speeds/acceleration as the S2000? That'll hurt the mpg a lot...

cf the Top Gear Prius vs M3 mpg test.

I drove my Clio like a twat because I hated how slow it was. I never got less than 53mpg out of it even in the depths of winter.

You can't really compare driving that like an S though when it was 14.5 seconds 0-60 although I regularly found myself trail braking etc on country roads to keep the speeds up!

EDIT: plus there has never been a mention of a hybrid in the equation...but look at how they work and that's a justified case you have LG seeing as they work from the petrol engine under hard acceleration. A diesel however doesn't come into this category.

I agree

we should all compare MPG with other sports cars

the s2k fares very well

my old E46 M3 Manual returned 200 miles off £80 fuel

I had a BMW 318D which did 45mpg with mainly town driving.

Now I have an S2000 and I would never go back...

A) The BMW diesel cost more to buy than the petrol equivalent
B) The cost of a new dual mass flywheel, clutch and DPF which was about to go cost all the money I was planning to save on fuel as I came from a Clio RS200 which did 28mpg.
C) It was literally the most boring car I have ever driven!!
D) Parts and servicing were expensive, they forced you to change the brake pad sensor when replacing the pads at an additional cost of £30 odd quid....even though it didn't need it!

To sum up, the prospect of owning a diesel seems good when you ONLY think about MPG but looking at the all round picture, you will find keeping the S2000 will give you more enjoyment and probably not cost much more when factored in with problems a diesel can have.

Can we have an MPG thread where we all try and get the worst?

I've recently managed to get mine down from a weekly commute +25mpg to a 22.3 last time I checked, so I'm getting better as the weather improves

What your 'worst' over a long run or a crazy trackday?
