My mate has a 2nd gen miata. I drove round some mountains and it handles great and its easy to drive. They've got no power realy but they are light and around twisties I had a hard time keeping up. I thought I was going to muller it to be honest but I think they are pretty even but its a lot easier to drive a miata maybe 8/10's of the limit. You can chuck a mx-5 into bends and near enough floor it out. I don't think it has the power or the weight that will break the rear wheels free of the road like an s2000. I know if I drove my s2000 like he drives his miata I would be heading off the road backwards into a tree!
When I was following him I hit a patch of oil in the middle of a corner and went very sideways but managed to save it and not go round the other way. His 2nd gen and another 3rd gen miata went over the same spot and didn't even notice. I'm convinced if I was in my old MY99 car with uk alignment I would have crashed then actualy, whatever they changed between 99-03 I think it worked!
IMO opinion having owned both and after having 4 MX5's in the family the S2000 will out handle an MX5, thing is with an MX5 is they are easy to drive and are very predictable.

I only genuinely realised the levels of dry grip in the S2000 when I took it on the track, when it was damp I was relatively slow and it was a handful but in the dry I could push it harder and harder than I thought was possible in the car.

It handled and cornered brilliantly.

Well in the same vein the S2000 should take a spanking from an Elise 111R round a track but at Donington the Elise was being overtaken by that turbo nutjob micra
I know the guy who owns that car but haven't seen him on track, how was he getting on?

As far as the whole handling issue goes, I took my S to Silverstone and found it was twitchy and with too much body roll for my taste. I would expect it to beat an MX due to the huge difference in power (my Mrs had one but got rid as "it doesn't have an engine!") but everything said above about the easy and predictable handling is true. On the whole I reckon my trackday 106 would be quicker round a lap than my S
