Chains used to go slack and need replacing.

New chains (on the S2k and the new VVTi Toyotas) are supposed to last "forever", but I doubt it.

What sort of mileage has been done on the car?
Car is high mileage, about 96k now

What symptoms have you got which means they are saying the chain itself needs changing?
Sounds very similar to the timing chain tensioner needing replacing. Its an intermittent ticking/rattling noise that only happens when the engine is hot and idling.

Why do you need to remove the head to change the chain?

Blimey, just noticed that you have take the timing chain of to change the oil pump, which means that the head has to come off too.

That's what honda want to do to my car to fix the rattle that sounds like its coming from the TCT but isnt.

It could be the pulley wheel the one furthest down , dont know the name but when they are on there last legs they make a slight knocking noise.

Chain, i also thought they last for many many miles way past 100k.

LOL @ TCT fitting, yep its a 20min job!

Also, Honda replaced the tensioner 8 months ago and the noise sounds like its the same problem.

Does anyone think they are trying to get out of replacing it free under warranty as they would have to if it is????

Unless my understanding of engines is entirely wrong, you need to remove the chain to remove all the valve gear to remove the head. You can't remove the head first.

Still haven't fitted my TCT. I'm too worried about dropping the pin into the engine.

Sounds like you need a second opinion from a different dealer/decent independent
