Default OBD2 codes

The car is a MY07 and has just last eve popped up one of those nasty MIL\CEL lights on the dash.

I had no choice but to drive it home (at low revs and speed) and this morning ran out and bought a code reader but had to make do with what I could find in the area so bought an RAC one from the local Agros which I think I paid through the nose for

After connecting and pulling the codes it showed I had 3 faults of which only 1 code could be given PO600 if I remember, which according to the booklet that came with the reader was something to do with seriel communications fault?

The car appears fine (at the low revs and speed I pootled home at) there wasnt any obvious issues such as misfiring or anything so I'm hoping it's something minor.

The car is now at Honda for them to decide but I wanted the OBD reader to see for myself what the problem was and was a bit dissapointed that only 1 of the 3 faults were shown.

Have I bought a pup with this code reader?

According to the FAQ it is

P0600 Multiplex Control System Troubleshooting
I'm sure that some knowledgeable person will be along to explain that one shortly.

That's a Geniscan GS300 unit marked up to twice the price!

Should work nicely though.

I'm pretty sure the code you have is because of a failed link between your ECU and the code reader. I've not seen it before.

I'd try it again and make sure the immobiliser is off, and ignition on.

Thanks Lee\Mark\Rich

The code is listed in the booklet that came with it Mark; but there were 2 other faults with N/A against them so I really dont know whether it was correct or not.

I plugged the device in and then turned the ignition to fire the motor so Immobiliser will have been off; the thing then runs through a bunch of stuff and finally allows me to scroll to these fault codes it thinks its found.

Anyhow I got the car back from the Honda dealer and they said they'd simply nuked the codes and test driven the car and it hadnt returned. £50+

On driving back from work again this evening it's re-appeared so back to the dealer tomorrow morning again.

Wierd thing is, the dealer mustn't have found anything serious or they'd surely have not wanted me driving it again?? so on that basis I'm wondering could it be one of these sensor jobbers? O2 or Map or whatever? The car drives fine and sounds and feels normal.

Wish I knew what I was doing.

They charged you £50 and told you nothing?!

Make sure they tell you the code this time, for free, before they clear it. I'm sure we will be able to help you more than they can if we get the code.

I suspect it's a lambda fault but that's a bit of a stab without knowing more.

I wouldn't worry about it too much though, driving it short term will be ok, and only stop driving it if it starts flashing.

Can you go check the code now?

I checked it again last night Mark and it was just 2 codes now, both of which just show N/A, the third code that I saw originally, the PO600, appears to have gone now; it must therefor be one of the N/A codes that is causing the illuminated MIL/CEL light.

Are there certain codes that only the Honda reader can read perhaps? or maybe I should have bought a more sophisticated code reader? If that's the case I'll try returning it to Agros for a refund and buy a better one.

Thanks for your input Mark, much appreciated; I will specifically ask them for the codes this time around.

Ach hold on, dammit.. must be more thorough here..

Just checked the Honda invoice and it does have a code and description as follows :-

Traced to Fault Codes P2A00 A/F sensor failure- circuit range/performance

Just to wrap this up..

My dealer found the sensor to be at fault and decided that a new sensor was required; they contacted Honda UK to request that the part be supplied free of charge as a good will gesture based on the fact the car is only 4 years old and possibly because I've generally been a good customer over the years.

The £350 part was free and I paid the labour for fitting which was around £80.

Big thumbs up to the dealer
