My view is if you want something for 2 grand that's reliable(yes they are!) and fairly quick don't buy anything over 7 years old. Although golfs are good cars they are IMHO overpriced on the used market... I'd buy something like this...

here

at the moment people can't sell them, but they're alot of car for no money. They have the 1.8 MGF VVC engine, so 0-60 should be under 8 seconds.

What about an old GTI - something like the 205 1.9 GTI - cracking little motor.
- or a Renault 5 GT Turbo, or Clio Williams, but trouble with these cars will be finding a good straight one, think they've all been crashed or modded by now, or just fallen apart.

The reason they don't sell is that most pensioners can't afford them

A very left-field suggestion!

They were a well-regarded drive.

The rear axle was from the Maestro and is a VW rip-off, other parts are Honda. The engine is used by Lotus, so it kind of squares the circle, too!

They have an image problem. But are as fast as some of the quicker hot hatches of the same class (and faster than most HHs). The fun of such a car is suprising the people in the classier motors, it's not something for poseing.

We're talking about a 2k car not a dream car.

Why don't you try an old Mini Cooper 1.6i? Great little car, fun to drive, good handling and a cult icon.

It's also nippy and is both cheap to run and insure. Plus, they hold their prices these days too so you won't lose much money on it if you sell it a year later.

I know it's not a "performance car", but I really don't think you can buy performance for

I'd say a MK2 16V golf too!! Ive got one and its loads of fun, easy to service and repair yourself, if you get a decent one your not going to lose any money when you come to sell it. Fitted mk3 rear calipers to mine and you dont get any probs with seizing!!

I put Mk3 callipers on in the end. My local VW dealer claimed that it couldn't done probably because it was a good money spinner to keeop fitting mk2 units that would fail again 2 years down the line, but a VW specialist sorted it for me

High insurance group though - group 16 I believe

I know the Fiat can almost keep up with the S2000 in a straight line, but how is it around corners ?!?
