so do you think this problem is simply the change in air temp ?

it didnt do it in its previous 6 seasons of ownership !

trying not to sound cynical, i hope starting it a few times fixes it but i would have thought a part mey need replacing.

One thing that i did notice a couple of weeks ago was:-

long motorway drive, temp gauge indicated the normal 3 bars then went down to 2 bars for a few minutes then back to 3 bars. It did that few times then a few days later it did this idle thing for the first time.

it did this idle thing intimitently for a few weeks, now its every cold start.

I dont think that is normal. They are affected by changes in ambient, but not for more than a day or so!

Temp sensor is a bit of an odd one - I would have the sensor / valve checked out.

Yes. There are 2 air pumps. The secondary one is there for emissions purposes on startup. The second to provide air while the car is idling (throttle is closed so it needs air from this pump into the manifold)

Check the lines to and from the pumps are clear, and check they are running. They live in the passenger side down by the headlight, right in the corner.

Looks like you have found the problem

On cold start you should hear one of them stop after 30 secs, like a little pshhh of air down the front right.

Well strangely enough yes !

I drove it late last night and late tonight, both starts were unremarkable!

Engine burst into life at a nice smooth 2000rpm both times.

I guess it cured it self !

Cant complain!!

I hope it stays that way !

Sounds like you've irritated something, shifted some corrosion & it's working again.

If it recurs, disconnect & re-connect everything in sight, with some WD40.
