R32

The driver of the car you raced must have been shite, its certainly not that easy against an R32. The old R32 was quite quick - 0-100 in 16 secs. The new R32 is even faster. IIRC the new R32 will hit 100 in 15 secs which is only 0.4 secs difference on the S - hardly a whooping.
Other good points are that it has bags of leg and head room, seats are amazingly supportive and heated, steering adjusts rake and reach so most can get comfortabe. Bad points are like most decent cars you cant leave them anywhere, I had all four wheels nicked when I left it at east mids. Popular for being knicked as they make good getaway cars according to a policeman friend. Standard stereo is crap and i mean utterly shite.
Feel the need to add my two pence worth here. Being from a Golf ownership background I have to say hats off to VW build quality, especially cabin feel. I know jap cars are well built too and I love the S2000 inside but it just doesn't have the same class (feel).
Any car is only as good as its driver. I've been up against an R32 and not been able to pull on it yet a friend of mine with a S2000 (who I was with at the time) pulled on one noticeably.
Love the grumble of that engine too. A butch German hum compared to the wailing scream of the Japanese Vtec.
Bottom line for me though

Phenom2k there is a possible explanation for this, you probably know so sorry if telling grandma to cut socks and all that. The r32 had a chip problem that caused the engine to hesitate, mine had it badly just felt restricted, anyway vw finally came out with 6463 update that cured this which it did and mine felt far more responsive. while all this was going on the likes of AMD where producing modified ecus that with exhausts gave something like 260bhp. Once vw had issued the revised ecu flash some people compared the two ecus and found that the vw flash was as good as the tuners. I dont know what the situation is now but the general opinion was that 6463 unleashed a bit more bhp. Whether it did on paper I dont really know but driving with it was a very noticeable improvement.
Slight performance differences don't translate to huge differences on the road, to actually get past an S2000 over 900 yards would require some serious horsepower.
I was behind a 996 Turbo on the motorway other day and was keen to see just how much faster they are on the road, at one point the road ahead opened up and he floored it (or maybe he just gently squeezed the throttle, it's hard to tell
) and even though I was VTECing in 4th he just took off. Not at all surprising of course, but impressive nonetheless.

Whenever somebody refers to an 'R32' I never know whether they are talking about Golfs or Skylards until a few posts in.

Agreed. He wasn`t trying.
On other runs I was behind him and we both made the move to overtake at the same time, and every time I gained ground on him slowly, but without effort.
He was trying, but the car just wasn't wast enough.

M3? very quick but no appeal or character.
Because I find it very strange that ANYONE would prefer driving an R32 over an M3
And no character?
They are tremendous drivers' cars
